Project Overview

The Goal

Design an app that allows users pre-place their orders while also providing real-time updates on the expected readiness of their selections for hassle-free pickup.

My Responsibilities

Conducting interviews, paper and digital, Wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs

The Problem

Busy workers and daily commuters are in search of a more efficient means to order their coffee, eliminating the need to wait in line for order placement.

My Role

UX Designer - Design an app for MediBridge
from conception to delivery.

My Process

Daniel Montiel

User Experience Designer (UX/UI)

Crafting a user-centric app is an exhilarating journey that starts with understanding the app's purpose, audience, and goals. Through thorough user research, I create personas that guide the design process. Mapping user flows and crafting the information architecture sets the foundation, followed by sketches, wireframes, and interactive prototypes. Usability testing refines the design based on user feedback. High-fidelity design brings visual elements to life with a focus on responsiveness. Collaboration with developers ensures smooth implementation, followed by testing and iteration. The launch is a milestone, but ongoing post-launch evaluation, driven by user feedback, fuels continuous improvement, ensuring the app exceeds user expectations.

Personas

Rachel is a busy school psychologist who likes to eat out for lunch. But she’s getting tired of waiting in line to order her coffee. She wants a quicker and better way to get her coffee without all the waiting

User Research

I conducted interviews and created an empathy map to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs, A primary user group identified through research was working adults who don’t have time to stop for coffee.

Journey Map

Mapping Rachel user journey revealed how helpful it would be for user to have access to a dedicated House Coffee App.

Paper Wire Frames

Taking the time to draft iterations of each screen of the app on paper ensured that the elements that made it to digital wireframes would be well-suited to address user pain points.

For the home screen I prioritied a quick and easy ordering process to help users save time.

Digital Wire Frames

As the initial design phase continued, I made sure to base screen designs on feedback and findings from the user research.

Easy navigation was a key user need to address in the designs in addition to equipping the app with location services.

Usability Study: Findings

I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the design from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.

Accessibility Considerations

Prioritizing accessibility is vital to ensure inclusivity for users of all abilities. Incorporating features like text-to-speech and screen readers enhances usability for individuals with disabilities, aligning with ethical considerations and expanding the app's user base.

Takeaways

While designing the Coffee House App, I learned that the first idea for the app are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies and peer feedback influenced each iteration of the app’s designs

Next Steps

Continuously enhancing the app involves conducting iterative rounds of usability studies to assess its performance and identifying new areas for improvement. This ongoing evaluation ensures that user experience remains at the forefront of development, allowing for the implementation of innovative enhancements that elevate the app's overall functionality and user satisfaction. - make this shorter
